I didn’t have much time to write or consume media this week (except Wimbledon — finals are 6am tomorrow, who’s getting up with me?!?), so I’ll just share a tasty, cold lunch recipe that lasts (almost) all week.
Make Ahead Lentil Salad — Bon Appetit
I prepared this almost exactly as written (I subbed walnuts for almonds) and only have a couple of notes.
Double the nuts: walnuts have a stronger flavor than almonds and there still weren’t enough.
Use a bag of pre-shredded kale. Who has the time?
Double the garlic and chile — this is my note for all recipes.
Don’t splurge on Castelvetrano olives. They’re twice as expensive as kalamatas and half as flavorful.
This recipe makes four servings, which is perfect because who wants to eat lentil salad on Friday?
Still The Place — Daphne Zuniga, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Laura Leighton
This might be the dumbest pod recommendation I will ever make, three actresses from Melrose Place recapping episodes of Melrose Place. A groundbreaking idea I know. I have a deep passion for Melrose Place I will never be able to understand. To be honest, I think it’s the main reason I wanted to move (in 2013!) to LA. In the first episode, Daphne reminisces about driving a Harley from LA to Nevada with Grant Show and some of the crew. Courtney, 32 years later, earnestly sounds hurt that she wasn’t invited. This stuff is fascinating to me.
Woman’s World — Katy Perry and Dr. Luke
The Pitchfork review of Woman’s World — Shaad D’Souza
I wouldn’t normally want to pile on Ms. Perry this week, as she is taking her turn in the cultural firing squad most recently inhabited by Jennifer Lopez. But Katy knows Dr. Luke has been credibly accused of rape by one of her peers, and she could have written a 2010s era cynical girlboss anthem with literally any other man. It doesn’t take Alanis Morissette to spot the irony.
The song is atrocious, the video is hard to watch. But Shaad D’Souza’s review, especially the brilliant final line, is worth the mess.
